Stud Calculator

Calculate the number of wall studs needed.

How It Works

Studs = ceil((Wall Length × 12) ÷ Stud Spacing) + 1.

Example

For a 24 ft wall at 16 in spacing: ceil(288 ÷ 16) + 1 = 19 studs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is "on center" spacing?

It is the distance between the center of one stud and the center of the next — 16 in is standard.

Do I need to add for corners and openings?

Yes. This is the basic stud count; corners, T-walls, and openings add extra studs.

What stud size should I use?

2×4 studs suit most interior and single-story walls; 2×6 for exterior walls with more insulation.
