Framing Calculator

Estimate studs, plates, and headers for wall framing.

How It Works

Studs = (ceil((Length × 12) ÷ Spacing) + 1) × Walls. Plate linear ft = 2 × Length × Walls. Plate pieces = ceil(Plate linear ft ÷ 8).

Example

For a 24 ft wall, 16 in spacing, 2 walls: 19 studs each = 38 total, 96 ft of plate → 12 × 8 ft plates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are plates?

Top and bottom horizontal 2x4s that cap each wall. Each wall needs two runs, hence the factor of 2.

Why 8 ft plate pieces?

Lumber is typically sold in 8 ft lengths, so total plate footage is rounded up to full pieces.

Does this include openings?

No — door and window headers, kings, and trimmers are extra framing beyond the stud count.
