2x4 Calculator
Calculate the number of 2x4s needed for framing.
How It Works
Pieces per section = ceil((Length × 12) ÷ Spacing) + 1. Total = Pieces per section × Sections.
Example
For a 20 ft section at 16 in spacing: ceil(240 ÷ 16) + 1 = 16 → 32 pieces for 2 sections.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why add one per section?
You need a stud at each end of the section, so the count is always one more than the number of spaces.
What is standard stud spacing?
16 in on center is most common for walls; 24 in is allowed for some non-load-bearing walls.
Does this include plates and headers?
No — use the framing calculator if you want top and bottom plates included.
