Fence Calculator

Estimate posts, pickets, and rails for a fence.

How It Works

Posts = ceil(Length ÷ Spacing) + 1. Rails = (Posts − 1) × 2 (or 3 for ≥5 ft). Pickets = ceil(Length × 12 ÷ 6).

Example

A 100 ft fence at 8 ft spacing: 14 posts, 13 sections → 39 rails at 6 ft height, 200 pickets.

Frequently Asked Questions

What spacing should posts have?

6–8 ft on center is standard for wood fences; wider spacing needs heavier rails.

How many pickets per foot?

At a 6 in pitch (5.5 in picket + 0.5 in gap), that is about 2 pickets per linear foot.

Do I need to account for gates?

Yes — each gate adds posts and extra hardware. Use the post calculator for gate impact.
