How It Works
Volume (ft³) = Width × (Tread Depth ÷ 12) × (Step Height ÷ 12) × Number of Steps.
Example
For 4 steps, 4 ft wide, 10 in tread, 7 in rise: 4 × (10 ÷ 12) × (7 ÷ 12) × 4 = 7.78 ft³ ≈ 0.29 cubic yards.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the volume seem small?
Each step is a small block (width × tread × rise). Most stair concrete goes into the supporting fill and base, not the steps themselves.
What is a good tread/rise ratio?
Building codes usually want risers of 7–7.75 in and treads of 10–11 in for comfortable, safe stairs.
Should I account for a landing?
Yes — add the landing separately as a slab if your steps lead onto one.
